In the studio’s own words

“Mammatus 02 is a sculptural plaster work developed from mineral plasters, where a traditionally rigid material is stretched, folded, and fractured into dimensional form - pushing plaster to its physical and structural limits.”

About the series

“Named after different storm cloud formations, this series highlights Peter Varga's persistent goal of learning, then defying, the limitations of plaster.”

Fine plasters have traditionally been used on walls, burnished onto hard surfaces built to stay static and stand the test of time. This series inverts that history: stretching, folding, creasing, and sculpting the same rigid material into pillow-like sculptures that combine multiple sheens and textures, with cracks and folds built in by design.
